The Choice

Your Will or Mine?

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

We all have desires, plans, fears, and ideas about how life should go. Having a will of our own is not the problem. The harder question is what happens when what I want begins to conflict with what is true, loving, merciful, responsible, and life-giving.

How do I know the difference?

I do not believe God’s will is simply whatever thought feels spiritual or whatever outcome I happen to want. Jesus taught us to recognize a tree by its fruit. So I look at what a direction produces.

• Does it lead toward truth or require deception?
• Toward love or domination?
• Toward courage or fear?
• Toward responsibility or avoidance?
• Toward mercy, repair, freedom, and life, or toward protecting my pride, comfort, control, and self-interest?

Sometimes my will and God’s will may already agree. Other times following the Way means surrendering what I wanted because something better has become clear.

“Your will be done” is not an invitation to become passive or stop thinking for ourselves. It is a willingness to let truth correct us, let love reshape us, and let the Spirit lead us beyond the limits of our own desires.

The Kingdom takes form on earth each time what is true, loving, merciful, and life-giving becomes more important to us than simply getting our own way.
